While studying at the Royal Conservatoire of
Scotland, clarinettist Ruaridh Bakke got a few friends together to play some
klezmer music. They were invited to play at the Spire concert series on
14 May 2022, and six-piece band Alba Challah was formed. Not
only do they play klezmer repertoire, but there is also so much more in the
form of thrilling classical/operatic repertoire arranged specifically for the
band.
The members of this group are from Scotland, Ukraine,
Netherlands and the USA. All have interesting backgrounds, within a wide range
of collaborations and across genres from classical, to traditional Scottish, to
folk music.
We
believe that they will bring a lively and energetic start to our season!

New Focus is a musical project featuring Scottish pianist
and composer Euan Stevenson and saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski. Their
collaboration has produced two albums, “New Focus” and “On
Song,” known for blending classical, jazz, and Scottish folk
elements. They also present a program called the Classical Connection which
explores the influence of classical composers on jazz musicians and features a
mix of original compositions and reinterpretations of classical pieces in a
jazz style.
Euan Stevenson is a composer, pianist, and improviser who
often starts his compositions on the piano, favouring tightly written, melodic
narratives with simple song structures.
Konrad Wiszniewski is a virtuoso saxophonist known for his
solo work, and exciting. Konrad has performed all over the world and
recorded/toured with artists such as Curtis Stigers, Martha Reeves and the
Vandellas, and Deacon Blue. He has appeared on television and radio numerous
times.

As prizewinners of the Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music
Competition 2023 and winners of the 72nd Royal Over-Seas League Competition
2024, they made their Wigmore Hall debut in June of the same year.
Named after the Spirits of Personality, Archai (pronounced
‘Ark-eye’) is also the plural of the word ‘Arche’, meaning the beginning or the
first principle of the world in ancient Greek philosophy. The name was chosen
to signify their origins, principles and desires to evolve and make music
together. With their roots spread across all corners of Europe, Trio Archai is
a miniature melting pot of culture from Scotland, Turkey, Spain, Ireland and
Germany. Using this to their advantage, the trio strives to expand their
knowledge beyond the standard repertoire and challenge audiences in future
performances.
Awarded the Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist Award
(PDGYA) by MakingMusic and winners of Tunnell Trust’s Awards Scheme 2025/2026,
they look forward to concerts at festivals and music societies throughout the
UK.
As an ensemble, the trio dedicate themselves to a broad and
diverse repertoire and, in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council
ProHelvetia, were given the opportunity to premiere a commissioned work by
composer Dominic Röthlisberger at the Swiss Chamber Music Festival 2024. They
look forward to in May 2025, where they will give the world-premiere of a new
composition for piano trio by Jeremy Sams, amongst standard repertoire.
Highlights of their season included a chamber residency at
Whittington International Festival, recitals at St George’s Bristol, Brighton
International Festival, and a 7-concert tour of Scotland in October/November.
Since 2023, Trio Archai has been studying under Claudio Martínez Mehner at the
Musik Akademie Basel and has worked with esteemed artists such as Patricia
Kopatchinskaja, Alexander Lonquich, Robert Levin, Alina Ibragimova, Dénes
Várjon and Rainer Schmidt. They are members of ChamberStudio UK, where they are
mentored in London by cellist John Myerscough. In April 2025, the trio attended
IMS Prussia Cove in Cornwall, where they worked with esteemed composer and
pianist Thomas Adés.

Event Details
Piers Adams is widely regarded as one of the greatest
recorder players of our time. Over his 40-year career he has recorded numerous
CDs and given thousands of concerts and broadcasts across the world with
his iconic baroque ensemble Red Priest and as soloist in many other
contexts. His dream to combine the
simplicity of the recorder with the possibilities offered by modern-day synth
technology led to the release of ground-breaking album Bach Side of the Moon in 2018 (which reached no.5 in the
international New Age charts) and to the formation of Baroque Alchemy.
Lyndy Mayle studied piano and harpsichord at Chetham’s
School of Music and the Royal College of Music. She has worked as music
director of several productions at the National Theatre in London and as a
recording artist on film and TV soundtracks.
Moving away from the performing world she practised for many years as a
music therapist before developing her reputation as a highly respected piano
teacher. Baroque Alchemy marks her
return to the concert platform – and to her early music roots – and she brings a
wealth of musical experience, passion and spirit to this joyful musical
collaboration.
