Event Details
Always endeavouring to explore many styles of music, every performance from the Genovia Quartet is unique and can be tailored to suit a variety of platforms. Whether you favour baroque, contemporary classical, or perhaps some jazz, folk and free improvisation, this quartet will take you on a whirlwind musical adventure.
The Genovia Quartet is a dynamic young bassoon ensemble formed of four graduates of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. From their first performance together in 2015, this quartet has had a strong musical bond and close friendship which translates into exciting and spirited performances.
The quartet clearly has four distinctive voices which they often use to represent the different sections of the orchestra, yet they will snap back to a unique blend of sound instantly when required. Putting their own stamp on even the most iconic of works allows the quartet to adapt to suit any occasion – be it traditional concert platforms, educational workshops or corporate social events.
Whilst students at the Conservatoire, the Genovia Quartet were awarded Highly Commended at the Governor’s Recital Prize for Chamber Music and subsequently received a highly coveted accolade – the Mary D Adams Prize for achievement in Chamber Music (2017). Notable performance venues include Leeds College of Music, the Merchant’s House of Glasgow, Usher Hall (Edinburgh) and Glasgow’s West End Festival where they have been invited back three years consecutively (2017-19).
In 2018, the Genovia Quartet were invited to perform at the prestigious International Double Reed Society Conference in Granada, Spain. Their recital included premières of some of their own arrangements alongside the Spanish première of ‘Pato, Pato!’ – a Genovia commission from Italian composer Raffaele de Giacometti.
In February 2020, the Genovia Quartet collaborated with Jackdaws’s Music Education Trust, and travelled to Somerset to feature ‘The Year of the Bassoon 2020’, visiting a total of 15 different schools around the County to deliver music workshops and performances.
Outwith the quartet, members of the group have performed and toured with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Ballet Orchestra among others. Keen teachers and educators, they also enjoy coaching young bassoonists as well as larger ensembles.
The Genovia Quartet are represented by Live Music Now Scotland and Classical Musicians Scotland.
Tickets £15. School students free

Our Club Runs
Weekly Sunday Spin
Meeting Point: Biggar Corn Exchange, 9:00/9.30 AM
The cycle routes are chosen each week depending on weather, participants etc but we aim to cycle for typically 3 to 5 hrs. Details are published on our members Facebook page.
On the Sunday Spin (depending on numbers) there will be two groups; One normally goes on a longer route (45 – 60 miles) at an average pace of 15 to 16 mph. The second group is more of a ‘social ride’ covering a shorter distance (25 – 40 miles) at an average pace of 13 – 15 mph.
We normally meet after the rides at the Kirkstyle Hotel for a coffee and cake so please remember to bring some money with you on the cycle. We do encourage new members to be able to cycle at least 30 miles, but out on the rides we stay as a group and go at the pace of the slowest member. Cycle Runs details and routes are posted on our Facebook page. Cyclist under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the run. If you are new to the club please read the rider etiquette page for more info before attending a club run (in particular, cyclists must bring ID and next of kin contact details).

Event Details
Booking is open for the spring term at Corn Exchange Young Performers – our high school classes will be working with a professional playwright on a new show called Song to Scene.
If your young person is aged 12-18 and loves dramatic pauses, big feelings, plot twists and learning how to make an audience laugh, cry and listen, they might like to join us at Young Performers this spring.
Our drama classes take place at Biggar Corn Exchange and are lead by professional theatremakers. There are no auditions and our maximum group size is 22 children.
We have two high school groups:
S1-3: Tuesdays from 4pm-5.45pm
S4-6: Tuesdays from 5.45pm-7.30pm
Our spring term runs weekly from 11th March – 3rd June. This time we’ll be working with a professional playwright to create something new: a unique show made up of scenes inspired by our young people’s favourite music with a performance for family and friends in the last week.
The fee for our ten-week spring term is £70 and there’s a discount available for siblings.
Corn Exchange Young Performers is kindly supported by The Loaningdale School Company.

You don’t have to be especially fit, skinny (or willing to shoehorn yourself into lycra) to benefit from these classes! All that’s needed is an openness to different ways of working with the breath, body and mind. We explore mantra, philosophy, breathwork, meditation and mindful movement – finishing up with a deep relaxation or yoga nidra. The aim here is not to “nail poses”, but to find kind and supportive ways to ease into a connected relationship with your own body, spirit and mind. As a curious side effect, maybe you’ll become stronger, better balanced or more flexible along the way! Please bring your own mat, blanket and any pillows, cushions or eye bags you may need. These classes are run by South Lanarkshire Leisure. Places should be booked in advance via Biggar Sports Centre, 01899 222066 or via the web – see below for details.

Event Details
Science Cafés are back for the 2024/25 Winter Season.
Venue: Kirkstyle Hotel, 72 High St, Biggar, 7.00 for 7.30pm monthly 3rd Thursday.
December 19th: Mathematics in Action
Prof. Tim Miller will work through some mathematical cameos of varying levels of sophistication: non-decimal counting systems, musical scales (the pesky ‘Pythagorean comma’) and solving Maxwell’s field equations for EV motor design…
January 16th: Dr Millie Lombard, Tsunamis in Scotland
February 20th: Simon Fisher, Precision Medicine
It is increasingly possible to collect billions of data points on a person, in particular regarding their genetics. Theoretically, this can be useful in predicting disease and selecting drug treatments. This talk aims to explain what is meant by “precision medicine” explore its potential transformative effect on society, and suggest why we are struggling to translate knowledge to bedside.
March 20th: David Michieletto, Can your DNA make the batteries of the future
Speaker: Davide Michieletto, PhD
Given hundreds of paper clips and a 15 metre rope, would you be able to build a robot? Surprisingly, DNA can do it. Scaled down 10,000 times, 2 meters of DNA are packaged in a cell nucleus, 20 times smaller than the width of your hair. Come find out how DNA has been packaged by life and possible applications in drug delivery and DNA batteries.
Science Cafés are aimed at an adult or older teen audience who may be professionals, students, teachers, retirees… anyone interested in science. Each month an invited guest will talk or lead discussions on a wide range of scientific topics.

You don’t have to be especially fit, skinny (or willing to
shoehorn yourself into lycra) to benefit from these classes! All that’s needed
is an openness to different ways of working with the breath, body and mind. We
explore mantra, philosophy, breathwork, meditation and mindful movement –
finishing up with a deep relaxation or yoga nidra. The aim here is not to “nail
poses”, but to find kind and supportive ways to ease into a connected relationship
with your own body, spirit and mind. As a curious side effect, maybe you’ll become
stronger, better balanced or more flexible along the way!

A great way to start Sunday morning !
Open to everyone of all ages and abilities.
Meet at Coulter Village Hall car park at 9am every Sunday
Routes vary around Coulter, depending on the wishes of the group
Turn up at 9am any Sunday or email john.riley1956@gmail.com for more details.
Come and join our Sunday morning running group, who meet at 9am in Coulter Village Hall car park most Sundays. A sociable little group of runners of varying abilities, who often split into two groups, to help those who want to run shorter distances (3km to 4km) at a slower speed. The other group might do 7km to 10km depending on the route chosen. Mainly running off-road, with the odd bit of tarmac in between. And we take plenty of breathers. Hope to see you!

Mendelssohn on Mull is a week in September each year when the Artistic Directors, the Maxwell Quartet, bring eight chamber musicians at the beginning of their careers to the Isle of Mull. The younger artists are drawn from conservatoires across the UK, and they won’t have met each other before. They form ensembles to explore masterpieces of string chamber music, and, after a few days of intensive rehearsal, they present music at eight concerts across Mull and Iona, in public concerts that are offered on a pay-what-you-decide basis. Each ensemble contains at least one member of the Maxwell Quartet, and there are opportunities to hear this world-class quartet on their own.
Now nearing its fortieth year, under its sixth directorship, Mendelssohn on Mull is undoubtedly the most memorable week of a future professional chamber musician’s training. Dozens of renowned performers in the field look back on their time as a student for a week on Mull with admiration and gratitude, including two members of the Maxwell Quartet itself.
Since 2019, the charity Sound Waves SCIO has invited some of the musicians from September back to Mull in the spring to form a quartet. Working without mentoring from the Maxwell Quartet, and based in the south of the island, the new foursome works on a programme nominated by the artistic directors, to perform it several times across Mull and Iona, in a parallel experience to that of September. All the
Spring Music 2025 artists study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. Our quartet for this evening is:
Annabel Stevens – violin
Victor Pevernagie – violin
Lauren Azusa Jack – viola
Shakira Segalla Humbert – cello
Programme:
HAYDN – String Quartet in C major, Op. 20 No. 2
Felix MENDELSSOHN – String Quartet No. 2 in A, Op. 13
SHOSTAKOVICH – String Quartet No. 1 in C major, Op. 49
The charity Sound Waves SCIO, that administers Mendelssohn on Mull, is deeply grateful to Biggar Music Club for hosting our first Spring Music venture in mainland Scotland. Our artists come to Biggar after five performances on Mull and Iona with a thrilling programme of
music spanning the history of the quartet.

Please come and join us for a screening of the highly acclaimed Six Inches of Soil at the Biggar Corn Exchange on the 10 April 2025, 6.30pm for 7pm start.
We will have complimentary drinks and nibbles before the screening. Tickets £10,
https://biggarce.yapsody.com/event/index/839809/six-inches-of-soil
The film tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil, improve our health and support local communities. The film aims to sound the alarm on a broken system, offer hope for meaningful change, inspire farmers to adopt agroecological and regenerative farming practices, and encourage consumers, food corporations and policymakers to support their efforts.
Six Inches of Soil is a story of three new farmers in the first year of their regenerative journey to heal the soil and help transform the food system: Anna Jackson, an 11th-generation arable and sheep farmer from Lincolnshire; Adrienne Gordon, a small-scale vegetable farmer in Cambridgeshire; and Ben Thomas, who rears pasture-fed beef cattle in Cornwall.
As the trio of young farmers strive to adopt regenerative practices and create viable businesses, they meet seasoned mentors who help them on their journey. They are joined by other experts providing wisdom and solutions from a growing movement of people dedicated to changing the trajectory for food, farming, and the planet.
Six Inches of Soil has already been shown over 400 times around the UK in cinemas, village halls and on farms, and we are really excited to bring this powerful film to Biggar.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by the producer Claire McKenzie and an audience Q&A session.
Your ticket includes a complimentary drink and nibbles on arrival. The bar will be open afterwards so we can continue the discussion.
Doors open 6.30pm. Screening commences at 7pm.

is an openness to different ways of working with the breath, body and mind. We
explore mantra, philosophy, breathwork, meditation and mindful movement –

Harben Kay, saxophone
Peter Johnstone, piano
Multi-award-winning saxophone and piano duo, Harben Kay and Peter Johnstone, are among the most compelling musicians to have emerged on the Scottish jazz scene over the past ten years.
Both winners of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year title – Harben in 2015; Peter in 2012 – they have known each other since their teenage years in youth jazz orchestras and have cemented their musical relationship with enthusiastically received duo appearances at events including Perth Festival of the Arts, and in Harben’s KIM Trio .
Harben grew up in Perth and began to develop the distinctive, considered approach that won them the Best Instrumentalist award at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2022 through playing with the Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra before studying at the Guildhall in London. Peter is also a product of the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra and is now the resident pianist with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Together, Harben and Peter have a great musical understanding. Both bring original compositions to the duo to complement their imaginative interpretations of standards from the jazz canon.
